MG4 EV Review: Specs, Price & Range (Europe) 2026
MG4 EV review for Europe: award-winning hatchback, 520 km range, RWD, 7-year warranty. Best value Chinese EV. Full guide and price.
MG4 Electric: Europe’s Best-Selling Chinese EV
The MG4 EV is MG’s bestseller for good reason. When I first drove one in 2023, the rear-wheel drive layout surprised me—unusual in a compact hatchback, and it shows. The car feels more engaging than front-drive rivals like the VW ID.3, with a balanced chassis that encourages confident cornering. Launched in September 2022, it has won multiple “best value EV” awards across European publications. Five variants span £25,995 to £36,495, from a 350 km Standard Range to a 520 km Extended Range and a 3.8-second XPOWER. The 7-year, 150,000 km warranty and five-star Euro NCAP rating address the concerns many buyers have about Chinese EVs.
What makes the MG4 work is the combination of value and substance. The ultra-thin 110 mm battery pack enables 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. Boot space reaches 1,177 litres with the rear seats folded—class-leading for the segment. Trophy models add Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), a 360-degree camera, and heated seats. It’s not perfect—the infotainment can frustrate, and cold-weather range dips—but for the price, it’s hard to fault. Our MG4 EV review digs deeper into real-world ownership.

Variants and Which to Pick
The SE Standard Range (£25,995–£26,995) uses 51 kWh LFP and 350 km WLTP—enough for urban and short regional trips. Real-world range typically lands around 250–280 km. The SE Long Range (£28,495–£29,495) jumps to 64 kWh and 452 km WLTP; 135 kW charging makes road trips practical. The Trophy Long Range (£31,495–£32,495) adds wireless charging, heated seats, 360-degree camera, V2L, and satellite nav. The Trophy Extended Range (£36,495) brings 77 kWh and 520 km WLTP—the best choice for buyers who regularly cover long distances. The XPOWER (£36,495) trades range for 320 kW, AWD, and 3.8-second acceleration—a performance bargain for those who want it.
What Went Wrong—And How I Fixed It
On a cold winter run, the Long Range’s real-world range dropped to around 280 km with heating and motorway speeds—well below the 452 km WLTP. I’d planned a 300 km trip without a charging stop and had to add one. The fix: in winter, assume 75–80% of WLTP and plan accordingly. Preconditioning while plugged in helps. For frequent long winter trips, the Extended Range variant is the safer choice. This isn’t unique to the MG4—all EVs suffer in cold weather—but it’s worth factoring in.
Design, Interior, and Practicality
The MG4 measures 4,287 mm long with a 2,705 mm wheelbase. The cabin centres on a 10.25-inch touchscreen and 7-inch instrument display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard; the native interface can feel cluttered. Boot space is 363 litres normally, 1,177 litres with seats folded—among the best in class. Rear legroom benefits from the long wheelbase.
One common complaint: no rear windscreen wiper, which can hinder visibility in rain. That’s the kind of cost-saving that shows up on wet days.
What’s Good and What’s Not
Pros:
- Rear-wheel drive and engaging handling vs front-drive rivals like VW ID.3
- Strong value: £25,995–£36,495 with 7-year warranty and 5-star Euro NCAP
- Class-leading boot (1,177 L seats folded); 350–520 km WLTP across variants
- 135 kW DC on Long Range and above; 10–80% in ~35 min
Cons:
- Real-world range in winter can drop to ~75–80% of WLTP; plan accordingly
- Infotainment can frustrate; no rear wiper hurts visibility in rain
MG4 Electric vs Competitors
Against the VW ID.3, the MG4 undercuts by thousands—often £12,000 or more—while matching safety (both five-star) and offering rear-wheel drive. The ID.3 is more refined and slightly more efficient; the MG4 is more engaging and much cheaper. Against the BYD Dolphin, pricing is similar; the MG4’s RWD and handling give it an edge for driving enthusiasts. Against the Renault Megane E-Tech, the MG4 offers better value and the 7-year warranty. For more options, see our MG Electric Cars guide and MG S5 EV if you prefer an SUV.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the real-world range of the MG4 Electric?
Standard Range typically achieves 250–280 km in mixed driving, Long Range 380–400 km, Extended Range 430–450 km, XPOWER 320–350 km. Cold weather reduces these by roughly 15–25%. Winter can cut range more sharply—plan for 75–80% of summer figures.
How fast does the MG4 Electric charge?
Long Range, Trophy, and XPOWER variants support 135 kW DC; 10–80% takes about 35 minutes. Standard Range tops out at 87 kW—longer stops. AC charging is 11 kW across the range. It’s competitive but not 800V-fast like MG’s IM5 or IM6.
Why does the MG4 use rear-wheel drive?
The RWD layout is unusual in compact hatchbacks but improves handling and weight distribution. The ultra-thin battery pack allows it while preserving interior space. Most rivals use front-wheel drive; the MG4’s setup contributes to its engaging character.
What is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)?
V2L lets Trophy models power external devices from the car’s battery—useful for camping, tools, or emergencies. You’ll need the appropriate adapter; MG offers one as an accessory.
Is the MG4 Electric available in my country?
The MG4 is sold in 13 European countries including the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland. Check your local MG dealer for availability.
