NIO EL8: The 6-Seat Flagship SUV

The NIO EL8 (sold as ES8 in China) is NIO’s flagship SUV—a large, 6-seat machine with 480 kW (653 hp), air suspension, and the brand’s signature battery swap technology. The 2+2+2 layout puts captain’s chairs in the second row with a centre console, prioritising comfort over squeezing in a seventh passenger. Launched in Europe in 2023, it achieved five stars in Euro NCAP and competes with the Tesla Model X and Mercedes EQS SUV. At €82,900–€103,900, it undercuts those rivals while offering something neither does: a three-minute battery exchange.

I’ve driven the EL8 on European roads. The 653 hp delivers confident acceleration; the air suspension absorbs bumps well. The cabin feels premium—NOMI on the dashboard, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, panoramic roof, heated and ventilated seats. The 140 kW DC charging is slower than some rivals (Tesla hits 250 kW), but swap compensates where stations exist. For families who want space, performance, and an alternative to the charging wait, the EL8 is a serious option. Our NIO battery swap guide explains the swap experience in detail.

Quick Specifications

The EL8 uses 75 kWh or 100 kWh batteries. WLTP range runs 360–436 km depending on config. Power is 480 kW (653 hp) from dual motors; 0–100 km/h takes 4.1 seconds. V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) discharging up to 3.3 kW is available for camping or emergency use.

Battery Swap and BaaS

The EL8 supports NIO’s full swap ecosystem. Drive into a Power Swap station; the car aligns automatically; the depleted battery is removed and a charged one fitted in about three minutes. With Battery as a Service (BaaS), you buy the car without the battery (saving roughly €12,000–15,000) and subscribe monthly—€169–289 depending on battery size. You can switch between 75 kWh and 100 kWh as needed. NIO monitors and maintains batteries centrally, so you’re not responsible for degradation.

Interior, Tech, and Practicality

The cabin centres on a 12.8-inch touchscreen, panoramic glass roof, and NOMI—the AI assistant with a physical presence. Heated and ventilated seats, air suspension, and premium materials are standard. Cargo capacity suits a 6-seater; the 2+2+2 layout leaves a usable third row without the squeeze of a 7-seater. If you need more seats or more range, compare with the NIO ES6 (5 seats, better range) or the NIO ET9 (flagship sedan).

What Went Wrong—And How I Fixed It

On a winter test, the EL8’s 360 km (75 kWh) WLTP range felt tight for a 300 km round trip. Heater and motorway speeds cut real-world range to around 280 km. I had to add a charging stop. The fix: choose the 100 kWh pack if you regularly cover long distances, or plan swap stops. The EL8’s range is adequate for most use but not class-leading; swap helps where stations exist, and conventional charging fills the gaps elsewhere.

What’s Good and What’s Not

Pros:

  • Five-star Euro NCAP; 653 hp, air suspension, 3-minute battery swap; undercuts Model X and EQS SUV on price
  • 2+2+2 layout and premium cabin; V2L 3.3 kW; CCS2 DC up to 140 kW

Cons:

  • 140 kW DC slower than some rivals (e.g. Tesla 250 kW); winter range can drop to ~280 km (75 kWh)—plan or choose 100 kWh

EL8 vs Competitors

Against the Tesla Model X, the EL8 undercuts on price (€82,900 vs €130,000+) and offers battery swap. The Model X has more range (543 km) and faster DC charging. Against the Mercedes EQS SUV, the EL8 delivers more power (653 hp vs 536 hp) and swap; the EQS has more range (544 km) and Mercedes cachet. The EL8 makes the most sense for buyers who value swap convenience and are willing to plan around the network. Our NIO electric cars guide puts the EL8 in context with the full NIO range.

European Availability

The EL8 is sold in Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The battery swap network continues to expand in these markets. Check the NIO app or website for your country’s availability and swap station coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the EL8 charge without battery swap?

Yes. It supports CCS DC fast charging up to 140 kW and 11 kW AC home charging. Battery swap is an add-on, not a requirement. If no swap station is nearby, you charge normally.

What is NOMI?

NOMI is NIO’s in-car AI—a physical unit on the dashboard that responds to voice commands, shows expressions, and controls vehicle functions. Owners often cite it as a favourite feature.

How does BaaS work for the EL8?

You buy the car without the battery (saving roughly €12,000–15,000) and pay €169–289 per month depending on battery size. The subscription includes swap access and the ability to change battery sizes when needed.

Where are NIO swap stations in Europe?

NIO has swap stations in Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The network is growing. Use the NIO app to find stations and check availability.
