Li Auto L8 & L7: Practical Family EREVs

Li Auto’s L8 and L7 sit between the flagship L9 and entry-level L6. Both use the brand’s EREV setup: ~200 km electric range plus a 1.5L engine as a generator, for over 1,200 km total. That removes range anxiety for long trips while keeping daily driving electric. European availability is still limited—Li Auto has focused on China first—but for buyers considering EREV or comparing Chinese EV brands, these are the models to know. The key difference: L8 has 6 seats with captain’s chairs in row 2; L7 has 5 seats with a bench in row 2.

EREV Technology

Both L8 and L7 use Li Auto’s Extended Range Electric Vehicle system. Electric motors always drive the wheels; the battery gives around 200 km pure electric range and the 1.5L engine acts as a generator when it depletes, for over 1,200 km total. For most daily driving (under 200 km) you’re on electricity only; the engine kicks in on longer trips.

L8 and L7 in More Detail

The L8 offers a 6-seat (2+2+2) layout with captain’s chairs in the second row, a large centre touchscreen, rear entertainment screens, air suspension on Pro/Max, AD Pro or AD Max ADAS, and a built-in refrigerator. Power is around 330 kW with 0–100 km/h in about 6 seconds. The L7 uses a 5-seat (2+3) layout with a second-row bench, more cargo space than the L8, and the same core tech (touchscreen, rear screens, air suspension, ADAS). It’s the lower-cost option. Choose the L8 if you need six individual seats and captain’s chairs; choose the L7 if five seats are enough and you want more boot space and a lower price.

Both offer AD Pro (camera-based, motorway assist, parking) and AD Max (LiDAR, urban assist, more autonomy). Infotainment includes a large centre screen, rear displays, voice control, OTA updates, and smartphone integration.

Pricing

In China, L8 runs from about ¥339,800 (Air) to ¥399,800 (Max) and L7 from ¥319,800 (Air) to ¥379,800 (Max)—roughly €43,000–€54,000. Estimated European pricing, if the models were sold here, would be around €48,000–68,000 for the L8 and €44,000–62,000 for the L7. Li Auto has not announced European sales for the L8 or L7.

L8/L7 vs Competitors

Against the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, the L8 delivers more EV-only driving (~200 km vs about 1 km) and more advanced tech, with similar or higher European list prices; the Highlander has long-standing reliability. Against the Tesla Model Y Long Range, the L7 offers 1,200+ km total range and quick refuelling when the battery is low, while the Model Y is pure electric with around 533 km range and 25+ minutes for a fast charge—the L7 suits those who want no range anxiety; the Model Y suits those who prefer full BEV and the Supercharger network.

Pros and Cons

What We Like

  • 1,200+ km total range; no range anxiety.
  • 5 or 6 seat options; practical family design.
  • Air suspension and LiDAR ADAS available; competitive pricing.

What Could Be Better

  • Not sold in Europe yet — Li Auto focuses on China; no European launch confirmed. EREV concept is also unfamiliar to many European buyers.
  • Still requires gasoline for long trips; service network would need to be established if exported.

European Market Potential

If Li Auto brought the L8 and L7 to Europe, the appeal would be clear: long range for continental distances, winter performance with the engine providing heat, family-focused layouts, and no dependence on charging in remote areas. The challenges are that Li Auto is not exporting these models to Europe yet, the EREV concept is still unfamiliar to many buyers, and the brand would need to build presence in a market that often prefers pure BEVs over range extenders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the difference between L8 and L7?

L8 has 6 seats with captain’s chairs; L7 has 5 seats with a bench. L8 is slightly larger and more expensive.

Q: Can I drive L8/L7 as a pure EV?

Yes, for up to 200 km. If you charge regularly, you may rarely use gasoline.

Q: Is EREV better than plug-in hybrid?

For EV driving experience, yes. EREV always uses electric motors; PHEVs often feel like gas cars when the engine engages.
