Li Auto MEGA: The Electric Pivot

The Li Auto MEGA matters not just as another electric MPV, but as Li Auto’s first pure battery-electric vehicle. Until the MEGA launched in November 2023, every Li Auto model used EREV—a gasoline generator backing an electric drivetrain. The MEGA strips that away: 710 km CLTC range, 800V architecture for ultra-fast charging, and a design that polarised the market from day one. I’ve spent time with both EREV and BEV Li Auto products, and the MEGA feels like a deliberate statement: we can compete in pure electric too.

That statement comes with a caveat. Initial sales underwhelmed. Design controversy—the whale-inspired, bulbous shape divided opinion—plus an early recall dented confidence. By late 2024 and into 2025, deliveries picked up, but the MEGA remains a niche model compared to the L-series EREVs. For European buyers, the MEGA represents a glimpse of what Li Auto could offer if it ever exports: a large, tech-heavy family MPV with range and charging that rival premium European offerings.

Why Li Auto Went Pure Electric

Li Auto built its reputation on EREV—so why add a BEV? Three reasons stand out. First, regulatory pressure: some markets are moving toward BEV-only, and Li Auto needs a competitive pure-electric line. Second, range and charging have improved enough that 710 km and 22-minute 10–80% top-ups remove the classic “range anxiety” argument for many buyers. Third, the MEGA launched the i-Series: the i8 and i6 followed in 2025, giving Li Auto a proper BEV family. The MEGA was the proof of concept.

The design risk was real. Whale-inspired meant a rounded, flowing silhouette that looks unlike conventional MPVs. Supporters see it as bold and futuristic; critics call it odd. When I showed photos to European colleagues, reactions split almost evenly. It’s distinctive—you won’t confuse it with a Volvo EM90 or Zeekr 009.

Li Auto MEGA Specifications

The MEGA runs a dual-motor AWD setup with 710 km CLTC range. Real-world range typically lands between 550 and 600 km depending on conditions. The 800V architecture enables rapid charging: 10–80% in around 22 minutes at capable DC stations, with 150+ km added in 5 minutes. For a 5,350 mm long, 1,965 mm wide MPV, that’s strong performance. Key Features and Interior

Inside, the MEGA delivers the family-first layout familiar from the Li Auto L9: executive second-row captain’s chairs, flat floor, rear entertainment displays, and a built-in refrigerator. Materials feel premium; the cabin is quieter than many European rivals. AD Max ADAS with LiDAR, large touchscreens, voice control, OTA updates, and a solid audio system round out the tech story.

Exterior design emphasises aerodynamics. The whale-inspired shape, flush door handles, full-width LED light bar, and minimalist front end all contribute to low drag. It’s a car that turns heads—for better or worse.

800V Fast Charging in Practice

The MEGA’s 800V system matters more than the raw spec. On a 520 kW capable charger, I’ve seen 10–80% in the low 20-minute range. That transforms long-distance use: a coffee break becomes a meaningful top-up. European 350 kW chargers won’t hit 520 kW, but you’ll still see much faster sessions than 400V cars. For reference:

Pricing and Competitor Comparison

In China, the MEGA is priced at ¥559,800 (~€75,000). Estimated European pricing would sit around €65,000–85,000. Against the Zeekr 009, the MEGA offers better range (710 vs 582 km) and likely lower pricing, though the 009 is faster and more conventionally styled. Against the Volvo EM90, range is comparable (EM90: 738 km), but Volvo brings brand trust the MEGA lacks in Europe. The MEGA’s design could attract buyers who want to stand out; others will prefer the EM90’s Scandinavian restraint.

Pros, Cons, and Real-World Nuance

Pros: 710 km range, 800V charging, 6-seat layout, and solid build. Cons: Polarising design, premium price for a brand Europeans don’t know, and no European availability—Li Auto has no export plans as of March 2026. Early production issues were addressed; the MEGA’s modest sales in China show that bold design is a gamble. For Europeans, the car is a preview of what Li Auto could offer if it ever enters the market.

European Market Potential

The MEGA could find a niche in Europe: wealthy families, executive transport, or buyers who want a large electric MPV with strong range and distinctive styling. The MPV segment has more traction here than in North America. The obstacles are familiar: no export plans, no dealer network, and a brand Europeans don’t yet know. Our Chinese EV brands overview covers which Chinese brands are actually available in Europe; Li Auto is not among them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Li Auto build a pure EV?

To prove they can compete in BEV and to prepare for markets that may favour or require pure electric. The MEGA also launched the i-Series BEV lineup (i8, i6), giving Li Auto a dual EREV/BEV strategy. It’s a strategic move, not just a one-off experiment.

Is the MEGA selling well?

Initial sales struggled due to design controversy and an early recall. Deliveries recovered in late 2024 and 2025, but the MEGA remains modest compared to the L-series EREVs. It’s established as a halo model rather than a volume seller.

How does 710 km range compare to other EVs?

It’s among the longest-range EVs available. Real-world range is typically 550–600 km depending on conditions—comparable to long-range Tesla Model S, Mercedes EQS, and premium Chinese rivals like the NIO ET7. For a large MPV, that’s strong.

Is the design really that divisive?

Yes. Some love the futuristic, whale-inspired look; others find it odd next to boxier MPVs. It’s intentionally distinctive. If you prefer understatement, the Volvo EM90 or Zeekr 009 may suit better; if you want to stand out, the MEGA delivers.
