NIO ET5: The Accessible NIO Sedan

The NIO ET5 is NIO’s most affordable sedan and a popular nio electric car—a compact premium EV with 360 kW (483 hp), coupé-inspired styling, and the brand’s battery swap technology. Launched in Europe in October 2022, it competes with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. It made history as the first car to achieve five stars under Euro NCAP’s updated 2023 protocol. With BaaS, you cut the purchase price by roughly €12,000—€47,500 for the 75 kWh variant instead of €59,500. That brings the ET5 into sharper contention with the Model 3 on price while offering swap and NOMI as differentiators.

I’ve driven the ET5 on European roads. The 4.0-second 0–100 km/h feels confident; the cabin is well finished; NOMI is a conversation starter. The boot is 386 litres—adequate for a sedan, though the ET5 Touring adds 450–1,300 L if you need more cargo. Real-world range typically lands around 350–450 km (75 kWh) or 450–550 km (100 kWh). Cold weather trims 15–25%. Our NIO battery swap guide explains swap in detail.

Battery Swap and BaaS

Swap takes about three minutes. BaaS cuts €12,000 from the purchase price: €47,500 (75 kWh) or €56,500 (100 kWh) with €169 or €289 monthly. You can switch battery sizes monthly—useful for occasional long trips. NIO maintains batteries; you’re not responsible for degradation.

Interior and NOMI

The cabin centres on a 15.6-inch AMOLED touchscreen (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 in the 2025 refresh), a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a 50-inch AR-HUD. NOMI sits on the dashboard—a physical AI that responds to voice, shows expressions, and learns preferences. Wireless CarPlay, OTA updates, and the NIO app round out the tech. The ET5 supports NIO’s L2+ ADAS including highway assist, lane-keeping, and remote parking.

ET5 vs Competitors

Against the Tesla Model 3, the ET5 offers more power (483 vs 366 hp), battery swap, and NOMI. The Model 3 has Supercharger access and slightly better range (602 km Long Range). Against the BMW i4, the ET5 accelerates faster (4.0s vs 5.7s) and undercuts on price. For an estate variant, see our ET5 Touring guide. For the flagship sedan, see the ET7.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an ET5 battery swap take?

About three minutes from arrival to completion. DC fast charging typically needs 30–42 minutes for 10–80%. Swap is significantly faster where stations exist.

What’s the difference between the ET5 and ET5 Touring?

Same powertrain and tech. The ET5 is a sedan with 386 L boot; the ET5 Touring is an estate with 450–1,300 L. Choose the Touring if you need more cargo space.

Can the ET5 charge without battery swap?

Yes. It supports CCS DC fast charging (140–180 kW) and 11 kW AC. Swap is optional.

Is the ET5 faster than the Model 3?

Yes. The ET5 hits 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds versus 4.4 seconds for the Model 3 Long Range. The Model 3 Performance is quicker (3.3s) but costs more.
