NIO ET7: The Flagship Sedan

The NIO ET7 is NIO’s flagship electric car—a large luxury EV with 480 kW (653 hp), 0.20 Cd drag coefficient (tied with the Mercedes EQS for the lowest of any production car), and the brand’s battery swap technology. Launched in Europe in October 2022, it competes with the Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, and Tesla Model S at roughly half their price. Euro NCAP awarded five stars with 91% adult occupant protection and 95% safety assist; Green NCAP gave 9.6/10 for efficiency. At €81,900–€90,900, the ET7 delivers similar or better performance than rivals costing €140,000+.

I’ve driven the ET7 on European motorways. The cabin uses sustainable rattan, microfiber suede, and 256-colour ambient lighting; the 23-speaker Dolby Atmos system is excellent. The 0.20 Cd contributes to strong range (450–580 km WLTP) and quiet cruising. The 150 kWh battery option (2026) will push range beyond 700 km. Charging uses CCS2. Our NIO battery swap guide explains swap; the NIO electric cars guide covers the full range.

Aerodynamics and Range

The 0.20 Cd comes from flush door handles, an optimised underbody, rear diffuser, smooth glass-to-body transitions, and air curtains. It matches the Mercedes EQS and beats the Lucid Air (0.21) and Tesla Model S (0.24). That efficiency helps range—the ET7 can cover long distances without frequent stops. The 150 kWh semi-solid-state pack (2026) will be available via swap, so existing owners can upgrade without buying a new car.

Interior and Technology

The cabin features Karuun rattan trim, a 10.2-inch instrument cluster, 12.8-inch AMOLED centre screen, and NOMI. The 33-sensor suite (including LiDAR) and NVIDIA Orin X chip power NIO’s NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) for highway and urban assist. OTA updates keep the system current. BaaS cuts €12,000–15,000 from the purchase price.

ET7 vs Competitors

Against the Mercedes EQS, the ET7 matches performance and aero at roughly half the price. The EQS has Mercedes prestige and a stronger dealer network. Against the BMW i7, the ET7 offers more power (653 vs 536 hp) and swap at lower cost. Against the Tesla Model S, the ET7 undercuts on price and offers swap; the Model S has faster acceleration (3.2s in Plaid) and Supercharger access. For a more affordable NIO sedan, see the ET5; for the upcoming ultra-luxury flagship, see the ET9.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the ET7 achieve 0.20 Cd?

Meticulous design: flush door handles, optimised underbody, rear diffuser, smooth glass-to-body transitions, and intelligent air curtains. Every surface contributes to drag reduction.

What is the 150 kWh battery?

NIO’s semi-solid-state pack offering 700+ km range. It will be available for battery swap from 2026—you can upgrade existing ET7s without replacing the car.

Is the ET7 better than the EQS?

On paper, similar performance and aero at roughly half the price. The EQS brings Mercedes cachet, dealer network, and proven reliability. The ET7 offers battery swap, NOMI, and significant cost savings. The right choice depends on your priorities.
