NIO ES8 Complete Guide: Flagship 6-Seat SUV, Battery Swap
NIO ES8: NIO electric car flagship with 653 hp, Zero-Gravity seats, 3-min NIO battery swap. Premium 6-seat (EL8 in Europe) 2026.
NIO ES8: The Flagship SUV (EL8 in Europe)
The NIO ES8 is NIO’s flagship full-size SUV and a leading NIO electric car—sold as EL8 in Europe for trademark reasons. It combines 480 kW (653 hp), a premium 6- or 7-seat layout, Zero-Gravity Lounge Seats, and the brand’s battery swap technology. Launched in Europe in September 2024, it competes with the Tesla Model X, BMW iX, and Mercedes EQS SUV. At €94,900–€103,900, it undercuts those rivals while offering something they don’t: a three-minute battery exchange and Battery as a Service (BaaS) that cuts the purchase price by roughly €12,000.
I’ve spent time in both the Executive 6-seater (captain’s chairs in the second row) and the Luxury 7-seater. The Executive layout prioritises comfort; the 7-seater adds a third row for families who need the extra capacity. The Zero-Gravity seats in front and second row are a standout—20-way adjustment, extended leg rest, heating, ventilation, and massage. The 27-speaker NIO LYRA system with Dolby Atmos makes long trips more pleasant. Our NIO battery swap guide explains the swap experience; the NIO electric cars guide puts the ES8 in context with the full range.

Battery Swap and BaaS
Swap works like every NIO: drive in, align, swap in about three minutes. BaaS cuts the purchase price by €12,000—€82,900 for 75 kWh, €91,900 for 100 kWh. Monthly fees run €169 (75 kWh) or €289 (100 kWh). You can switch battery sizes monthly. NIO maintains batteries centrally, so degradation isn’t your concern. Our NIO EL8 guide covers the European-spec version in more detail.
Interior: Zero-Gravity and Tech
The cabin centres on Zero-Gravity Lounge Seats (front and second row), a 15.6-inch centre display, 21.4-inch overhead display for rear passengers, and a 38-inch AR HUD. NOMI, NIO’s AI assistant, sits on the dashboard. The 27-speaker LYRA system supports Dolby Atmos. Cargo runs to 777 litres (230 L frunk + 547 L boot), expandable to 3,230 L with seats folded. A power drawer fridge (8.8 L) is available. The PrimeRide Smart Chassis includes dual-chamber air suspension and CDC damping—ride quality is strong.
What Went Wrong—And How I Fixed It
On a long trip, I assumed swap stations would be evenly spaced. Between two cities, the next station was 80 km away with 60 km of range left. I switched to DC charging and added 25 minutes. The fix: plan swap stops in advance using the NIO app. Where the network is dense, swap is brilliant; where it’s thin, have a charging backup. The 100 kWh variant’s 510 km range gives more margin.
ES8 vs Competitors
Against the Tesla Model X, the ES8 undercuts on price and offers battery swap; the Model X has more range (543 km) and faster acceleration in Performance trim. Against the BMW iX, the ES8 delivers more power (653 hp vs 240–523 hp) and swap; BMW brings brand recognition. Against the Mercedes EQS SUV, the ES8 costs less and offers swap; the EQS has more range (544 km). For more NIO options, see our ES6 guide (mid-size) and ET7 guide (flagship sedan).
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an ES8 battery swap take?
About three minutes from arrival to completion—faster than a typical 10–80% DC charge (21–30 minutes). You stay in the car throughout.
What’s the difference between Executive and Luxury seating?
The Executive 6-seater has second-row captain’s chairs and a centre console—best for comfort. The Luxury 7-seater adds a third row for families who need more seats. Both share the same powertrain and tech.
Can the ES8 charge without battery swap?
Yes. It supports CCS DC fast charging (140 kW for 75 kWh, 240 kW for 100 kWh) and 11 kW AC. Swap is optional; you can use conventional charging anytime.
Where are NIO swap stations in Europe?
NIO runs 50+ stations across Germany, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The network is expanding. Use the NIO app for locations and availability.
